Visiting the Dentist

Regular appointments with the dentist are a great way to prevent problems and keep smiles healthy!

What Should I Expect at the Dental Office?

A Thorough Mouth Cleaning

Using special instruments, a dental hygienist will scrape below the gum line, removing built-up plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease, cavities, bad breath and other problems. Your dentist or hygienist may also polish and floss your teeth.

Dental X-Rays

These "pictures" show the dentist what's going on inside the teeth and beneath the gum line. During the X-ray, you will wear a lead apron to prevent unnecessary exposure.

When Should I Visit the Dentist

Scheduling regular appointments for the entire family is a great way to keep your teeth bright and healthy for life. Your dentist will tell you how often to visit. For children, be sure to schedule the first visit before his or her first birthday.

TIP: Take your young toddler with you to your own appointment first. That way, the dental office becomes a familiar place.
